Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a method of physical treatment developed by A. T. Still, an American physician in the 19th century. It is an established and recognised system of diagnosis and treatment that offers primary medical healthcare to patients.

Osteopathic treatment is designed to correct an individual's mechanical problems via the use of gentle manual techniques applied to joints, muscles and ligaments.  In some cases the use of manipulative adjustments are employed in order to release joint restrictions, inhibit abnormal neurological reflex pathways and stimulate the natural healing processes of the body.

Classical Osteopathy

Classical osteopathy does not restrict itself to symptomatic relief but also aims to improve musculo-skeletal integrity, stability and physiological function of the body i.e. find the root cause of your problem. It may be of particular value in instances where traditional medicine is not able to provide relief. Treatment is based on the principle that the body, in its optimum condition, has the power to heal itself. The body’s natural ability for repair and immune response can be compromised by the malfunction of some aspect of the musculo-skeletal system. The Classical Osteoapthic approach aims to re-establish the close relationship and free articulation of structure (bones / joints), thus improving nervous integration and movement of vital fluids.

Conditions Treated

Osteopathy can be applied to treat a variety of complaints. Some of the most common conditions treated are listed below.

  • Back pain including sciatica and lumbago

  • Shoulder/arm pain and restriction

  • Neck pain including whiplash

  • Some arthritic pain

  • Neuralgia

  • Muscle spasms

  • Stress and tension

What to expect on your first visit

Your first consultation and treatment takes between 30-40 minutes.  You will be asked about your current symptoms, past medical history, lifestyle and activities.  If you are taking prescription medication it is usefull to bring along a list of these.  You may then be asked to remove some of your outer clothing (underwear is never removed).

The subsequent examination enables us to see any structural abnormalities or postural problems which may be contributing to your symtoms.  If osteopathic treatment is appropriate for you a treatment plan will be discussed along with an estimate of the number of treatments required and expected outcomes.  As a general rule, the longer the condition has been present, the longer it may take to resolve.

Osteopathic treatment is hands-on and involves gentle manipulation of the spine and joints along with some massage of soft tissues.  Due to the physical nature of the treatment, it is not unusual to sometimes feel sore or stiff in the first 24-48 hours following treatment.  Any likely reaction you could expect will be explained to you.  If you have any concerns following treatment it is important to contact the practice for advice.

You do not need a referral from your GP or other health professional to visit an osteopath.
